BMX legend Dave Mirra, as well as top skateboard vert competitor Bucky Lasek and reigning European Rallycross Champion Sverre Isachsen have joined forces with sports lifestyle brand Puma for a new endorsement deal just prior to the start of the 2012 Global Rallycross Championship, which begins on May 26 in Charlotte, N.C.

“Puma and Subaru’s strong histories in motorsport and the brands’ collective following across sport and lifestyle bring a new energy to Rallycross. The all-star, three-man driving team is captained by BMX legend and professional Rally athlete Dave Mirra,” said Puma in a press release.

“Stoked to be part of the new Subaru Puma Rallycross team,” said Mirra, a member of the Subaru Rally team in the USA and owner of Mirraco Bikes. Mirra left DC Shoes in January of this year and hinted at a new deal in the works, but has kept a low profile on the BMX scene for most of the year. He now joins a respected list of former Puma sponsored BMX pros that includes Troy McMurray, Mark “The Gonz” Gonzalez and many former members of the S&M and KHE Bicycles teams in the late ’90s.

Mirra’s signing with Puma is a not implicitly a BMX endorsement deal, but will most likely carry over into any future BMX endeavors Mirra undertakes.

“Mirra and the team will sport official fireproof Puma racing suits emblazoned with Zombie Cat graphics and a new performance racing shoe called the PRX Subaru. Puma will be releasing lifestyle footwear, tees and accessories inspired by the team and rally cars beginning in June,” says Puma.

Lasek left Vans in December of 2011 and has been without a shoe sponsor in the time since. Via Facebook, he made the following announcement: “I’m joining Dave Mirra on the newly formed Subaru Puma Rallycross team. Get a taste for what’s in store for the 2012 Global Rallycross Championship season.”

The six-round 2012 Global Rallycross Championships kicks off May 26 in Charlotte. The Global Rallycross Championship combines the best aspects of circuit racing, off-road racing and rally competition to deliver intense action in a variety of fan-friendly environments.

Offering dancing shoes for stars

The story of 30-year-old Jameel Shah is no less than a Bollywood movie. He ran away from home, in Bihar, when he was just 14-years-old, landed in Mumbai with his fingers crossed and 15 years later it is the realization of a dream he never dared to dream.

In 2007, Shah founded Shah Shoes is one of the only professional companies in India to make dancing shoes that are worn by the likes of Kylie Minogue to Kajol. Producing 150 pairs of dancing shoes every month, Jameel’s shoes cost anywhere between Rs 1,500 and Rs 3,000. He currently sells in Mumbai, but has plans for a PAN India presence.

A class VII dropout, Shah didn’t know anything about business or shoes and yet today he runs a shoe manufacturing outlet in Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum and a hotbed of entrepreneurial activities.

Having spent his childhood in the lanes of Dharavi, working in a leather tannery, selling mobile phone covers, chasing the friend who ran away with his money and even as a watchman to make ends meet, Jameel found his calling in the most unusual setting, a Salsa class.

His passion for dance let Jameel to start Shah Shoes with the Rs 5 lakh loan to buy 120 sq ft workshop space at Dharavi. Today, Shah Shoes is the only professional company in India to make dancing shoes. From tinsel-toed salsa stilettos and hip-hop pumps to tap dancing shoes and ballet flats, Jameel has it all carved out. He has a lean army of four to help him out.

But, what is the secret behind the success of Shah Shoes? “My dancing shoes are special because I make them in three pieces to make it comfortable and steady. We have some four-five workers who make those shoes. I have a workshop in Dharavi and I can buy the material from Dharavi itself. Sometimes people say, they want a particular colour and I don’t find the same colour or same material in Bombay, which is the main problem I face,” explains Shah.

Producing 150 pairs of dancing shoes every month, costing anywhere between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,800, Jameel today has gross revenues of Rs 3 lakh. For this, he gives all credit to his mentor Sandip Soparrkar who not only gave him the moves but also helped him create the perfect dance shoes.

This Dharavi cobbler now has a celebrity clientele from Kylie Minogue to Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu. Currently, selling in Mumbai, Jameel has plans for a pan India presence.

However, it is not shoemaking that is Shah’s first love, dance is his first love. An assistant to Sandip Soparrkar, he has his name included in the Limca Book of Records 2006 for dancing continuously for 55 hours and 15 minutes. Shah was also crowned the National Champion for Latin Ballroom dancing in 2010. Putting his right shoe forward, Shah has recently opened a coaching center in his native place Doghra in Bihar.

Shoe designer Louboutin defends right to red soles

Dressed in a smart red checked jacket, jeans and steel-toed leather shoes, Louboutin was in London to open his first UK retrospective to mark the brand’s 20th anniversary at the Design Museum.

Louboutin told Reuters that the PPR Group were being extremely unfair in the court battle over red soled shoes.

“They lead out of luxury and they should know that luxury has identity signatures,” he said.

A US court rejected a request by Louboutin to stop the sale of YSL shoes that are red all over, including the soles.

“It’s very hypocritical because they themselves… own colors. I just don’t understand how you can say well, you cannot own a specific color on a specific place when you yourself own different colors.

“I’m a self-made person, I’ve run my own company for 20 years and this big massive group is able to hammer me, with the biggest amount of lawyers. They try to damage me, my company and it’s extremely unfair especially someone that I knew, who I thought was a friend, who just happened to be a very weak person,” he added.

The designer unveiled hundreds of pairs of shoes that he had created over the years, saying the journey had been “emotional” for him.

“If you integrate so much of your life, your professional life, your personal life, there is no way you cannot not be emotional about it,” Louboutin said.

The designer also defended his previous comments that women who cannot walk in his shoes, shouldn’t wear them and that wearing high heels is both pleasure and pain.

“When I do a shoe, I don’t want to evoke comfort… saying that suffering to be beautiful, it doesn’t work. It doesn’t give you nice smiles, that’s a sure thing.”

The exhibition Christian Louboutin features some of the designer’s most successful designs as well as his more creative interpretations such as crystal encrusted ballet slippers with an eight-inch heel for the English National Ballet.

The owners of a Mt Eden clothing boutique are determined to get back on their feet after more than 200 garments worth almost $30,000 were stolen in a pre-Christmas raid.Between 1am and 1.30am on December 21, thieves ripped the door out of the Paisley Boutique on Mt Eden Rd and stole 237 pieces of clothing and jewellery.A neighbour who was woken by the boutique’s burglar alarm got a glimpse of the intruders and called police.Co-owner Peter Braithwaite says the neighbour told police he saw a person sitting in a Subaru stationwagon and two others loading armfuls of the shop’s designer clothes into the car.As they drove away, the neighbour is believed to have heard one of the thieves yell “power to the people”.

Braithwaite opened the boutique in 2010 with his business partner Donna Owen and says the stolen garments made up almost all of the shop’s summer stock – worth around $27,000.”That’s summer over and done with for us,” Braithwaite says. “Half the shop is empty.”He says buying fabric is difficult at this time of the year and most suppliers are bringing out their winter ranges.Despite the break-in, Paisley Boutique is still open for business.One clothing rack remains untouched and Braithwaite says they have put out stock that was in storage and will continue to fill the store with custom made-to-measure designs.

While an insurance payout will cover the cost of what was stolen, the owners say getting back to where they were won’t be easy.”It takes quite a while to build up that amount of stock,” Braithwaite says. “We’ll just have to move forward and do the best we can.”As well as the custom Paisley designs, some garments from the Augustine International and Brady brands were also taken.Braithwaite says all of the designs are distinctive and easily recognisable.He says he was told by police that much of what was stolen is likely to end up in markets and while they have considered trawling them for their stolen stock, they doubt they would have much luck.

Get Ready for Construction in Downtown Healdsburg
“While the work is occurring you may experience construction-related impacts, such as noisy conditions, traffic delays, detours, and visual nuisances,” the city notice says. “Additionally, curb parking will be periodically restricted during the work as indicated by posted signs.”

Here are the projects (see also map at right):

1. Healdsburg Avenue In-Roadway Lights Project (Blue circles on attached map): This project will install pedestrian activated in-roadway LED lights at two existing crosswalk locations
to alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians. The project will also include minor concrete work.

2. North Street Storm Drain Project (Green circle on attached map):
This project will install approximately 200 linear feet of storm drain pipe from Foss Creek to just west of Healdsburg Avenue in preparation for the upcoming 2012 downtown streetscape project.

3. Center Street Storm Drain Project (Yellow circles on attached map):

Storm drain work over a 35 day period at several locations. This project will increase the capacity of the existing drainage system to prevent drainage backups during the rainy season.

The work will include replacing two storm inlets and installing a new manhole and pipe in Matheson Street.

The work will include significant excavation of the northeast corner of the intersection, installation of three new inlets and new pipe in the street. Additionally new sidewalk and pedestrian improvements will be installed.

If any significant changes occur to these projects, Public Works will provide updates through informational letters.

“We recognize the inconvenience and disruption to your street during construction,” city staff said in the notice. “Your patience during the work will be greatly appreciated.”
